Life in Toronto

Toronto is one of the safest large cities in the world, and one of the most culturally diverse, with 100 languages and dialects (though English is spoken by nearly everyone). Students from around the world will feel at home here, and have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become acquainted with dozens of cultures.

With a regional population greater than five million, the Toronto area is a magnet for classical musicians from around the world, and has a vibrant local scene featuring the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Canadian Opera Company, the National Ballet of Canada, Opera Atelier, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, and numerous choirs and ensembles.

The Glenn Gould School is located in the city’s museum and university district. Right next door is the Royal Ontario Museum’s remarkable collections of European, Asian, and North American artefacts and musical instruments, providing a wonderful context for understanding cultural history.

The area also hosts the annual Luminato Festival of Arts + Creativity featuring celebrity musicians, dance, and theatre performers from around the world, the Toronto Summer Music festival, the International Festival of Authors, and the Toronto International Film Festival (one of the top five in the world).

The city has an efficient subway and transit system that makes getting around easy and affordable. There is plentiful student housing in the immediate area, along with superb libraries, bookstores, and instrument dealers — everything you need to enhance your Glenn Gould School experience.
